Minimalist Approaches in Osteopathy
L'approccio minimalista in osteopatia

Minimalist Approaches in Osteopathy

Find It, Fix It and Leave It Alone

The Minimalist Approach in Osteopathy emphasises that 75 - 80% of the treatment is diagnosis. The course aims to review the global osteopathic examination, highlight significant dysfunctions, and establish a hierarchy between them through mechanical, neurological and circulatory links. Afterwards, we will examine how to perform the treatment to maximise the outcomes.

Another fundamental principle of this course is the “lesion chains” and how they display individually for each patient based on many factors. The course aims to provide a theoretical basis for the minimalist approach developed on osteopathic principles and practice. In addition, we will discuss various models for a better understanding of how the body reacts to internal and external stresses.

We will demonstrate and practice a comprehensive global assessment routine. Moreover, the participants will learn to acquire a comprehensive diagnostic framework to identify and differentiate the dysfunctions and detect the relevant ones (“key lesions”).

We will also address the clinical reasoning to link dysfunctions, reactions and clinical presentations and practice selected osteopathic techniques.

What will the participant learn from this course?

The material introduced during the course can be immediately embedded in practice. These concepts, theories and methods will complete and integrate previous knowledge and experience and provide the participant with a solid understanding of this osteopathic approach. The aim is to motivate, inspire and have fun!

Programme

Saturday 18th November

  • Introduction to the course with learning objectives
  • The minimalist approaches in osteopathic principles and practice
  • Diagnosis in osteopathy
  • The concept of the “key lesion” and lesion-chains in osteopathy
  • Body systems and lesion vectors
  • The total osteopathic lesion and the minimalist approach
  • Regional interdependence model: where research meets practice
  • Patient assessment: using the global osteopathic examination to highlight “key lesions” or areas of significant dysfunctions
  • Practice: starting the assessment routine in standing position

Sunday 19th November

  • The “filter approach”: considering the patient within this concept
  • Body typology, dominance and treatment
  • Body physiology and the minimalist approach
  • Analysing lesion relationships using the mechanical, neurological and fluid links
  • Other methods of considering important dysfunctions
  • Continued assessment of the patient in standing and seated position

Monday 20th November

  • Bringing it all together
  • Establishing hierarchy of dysfunctions and the individual lesion-chains
  • Selecting the appropriate treatment approach and technique based on considering the patient in context, including typology and the global osteopathic assessment
  • Patient prognosis
